About The Payne/Arnold,Knapton ,site
The payne family were pioneers of the southwest of perth w.a.having left
England
Along with the knaptons>John Herring was the first to arrive per Warrior
12th March 1830 George Holland Knapton arrived 9th May 1854 per Travancore
Bringing with him his wife Eliza and 3 children Elizabeth Herring his mother in
law who was John Herrings wife apart for some 24 years In December 1840 George
and Julia Payne sailed for Australia on the Parkfield anchored in Koombana
18th march 1841 they had a very bad time getting settled George and Julia
moved to Capel by the river.where their life began.
And life wasnt very easy on them. The generation today would never begin to
understand how hard life was in those times and how they managed to survive
with
what they had.which was not very much..From all records those who landed here
had
a torrid time, until each settler was able to purchase their own blocks of land
which were available at 2 shillings per acre. This was a lot of money back then
most settlers left after serving their 3 years, to which they were customarily
signed on for.It was at this time George and Julia shifted to capel with their
family got a block of land some 2 miles east of the capel river, where George
dammed
the river and built a flour mill from pit sawn timber He also made by hand out
of timber, all the internal workings..Sometime after the mill ceased to work
most
of the workings were used to repair and get the south perth windmill on the
freeway working which I find very interesting I am very proud of my
ancestors...They were true pioneers. And very well Respected, new generation are
still going strong and living in the southwest ,Bunbury Busselton Capel and
Dongara .DONNEYBROOKE WA
